Two Articles – Part-time Consulting and The Value of Degrees and Certifications

some of my articles published at informitHere are two articles of mine that went live at informit.com.

How To Start I.T. Consulting Part-time
The first offers some ideas on how to start consulting on a part-time basis. More than 20 years ago, I won my first consulting client, walking into a 1 person law-firm to find a rather frustrated attorney and his secretary trying to connect their PC via a 2400 baud modem to Weslaw. Good timing! I served that attorney for the next 2 years until they moved.

The Value of Degrees and Certifications
The question comes up all the time.. “Should I get a degree or certifications?” The quick answer, “Yes!”  But the real question becomes, how do you experience into that mix. That is the holy grail of career development.

As it turns out, this article (not one of mine) discusses some interesting information regarding I.T. professionals, industry growth, and degrees (or not).

  1. Great article. I concur with your analysis of degree vs. certification or combination of both. Take it from me who has been in IT for over 20 years, has held just about every certification known to mankind but does NOT have a degree — it can hold you back. The experience and certs can only get you so far.
